There are some great movies available on DVD now. Recently released new movies on DVD include Alice in Wonderland, Shutter Island, Hot Tub Time Machine, Avatar, From Paris with Love, Crazy Heart, The Wolfman, The Lovely Bones, and The Road.

Alice in Wonderland, presented in 3D format, is another hit for Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter with co-star Helena Bonham Carter playing the Red Queen. Helena’s husband Tim Burton created this fun film, now available on DVD. There is a new twist in the story, with the Queen’s son being a not so nice boyfriend of Alice’s. After she travels to Wonderland to try to find him, all sorts of troubles begin. If you rent or buy this DVD movie, you really should get the 3D glasses with which to view it. Shutter Island is a Leonardo DeCaprio thriller, which will keep you wondering what is really happening inside the rugged island’s insane asylum. The film makes great use of illusion, flashbacks, dreams, and setting to build a suspenseful story.

Hot Tub Time Machine, out on DVD, is a light comedy in which, as the title says, a hot tub is the link to time travel. Four friends soaking in a hot tub, getting a bit mellow with drinks, fall asleep and on waking find themselves back in the year 1986. The hilarious misadventures that then unfold lead each of them to a better understanding of who they are and what they want out of life. This DVD is fun and will leave you feeling happy. Avatar is an innovative film, the first to take 3D technology to a new level. As I sat in the theater watching this film, the leaves of the mother tree seemed to be falling around my shoulders. Flying creatures zoomed at me, and the action scenes showed distant and near objects in a more realistic 3D manner. The story line is about good and evil, technology versus nature, and the nature of life itself. This is a must see movie that is a new release DVD.

Other new DVD movie releases are From Paris with Love, Crazy Heart, and The Wolfman. From Paris with Love stars John Travolta. If you are a Travolta fan, you will find this movie highlights the Travolta style and humor. This is a film about the fight against terrorism, with lots of shooting and car crashes, combined with the glamorous setting of Paris. There is a mission to be accomplished that Travolta takes on with the aid of another agent. The two of them banter about what to do and how to do it as they race through the streets of Paris to prevent a terrorist attack. In the newly released DVD movie Crazy Heart, Jeff Bridges plays the part of a musician whose life has been devastated with alcoholism. The story reveals the ongoing effects of his lifestyle as he tries and fails to build new connections and restore old ones. His love interest is Maggie Gyllenhall, who always adds charm to a film. The ending of the story is not what you might expect. This is one of Jeff Bridges best performances, for which he won an award. The Wolfman, a recent DVD movie release, has a cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Torro, and Cristina Contes. The opening lines of the film contains this quote: “Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.” The story is based on the original Wolfman movie and has all the appeal of the dark, tormented side of life.

Lastly, The Lovely Bones and The Road have been released recently in DVD. In The Lovely Bones film story is told from the perspective of a murder victim, a young girl, who from beyond guides her family to solving her murder. It is a touching story that will keep your interest to the end. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for best actor for his role in The Road. The Road is an apocalyptic film based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy, who wrote the novel No Country for Old Men. The lead characters are a father and son who traverse through a world destroyed, where little animal and plant life remain, and the few survivors gnash and claw at one another to survive. If disaster films are your favorite thing, this DVD movie newly released will give you a solid evening of entertaining struggles.
