art director mystery leonard

(NBC, 12/18/1972, 120 mins). An engaging comedy mystery about a couple of eccentric mystery writers, a spinster and her widowed sister, who turn detective to hunt down the killer of a faded movie star (Paulette Goddard, who came out of retirement to play the role) with the help of their ex con bodyguard/chauffeur (Art Carney), hired by their police lieutenant nephew to keep them out of trouble. This was the pilot for the brief series (1973-74), four episodes as rotating elements of the “NBC Tuesday Mystery Movie.” Hayes and Natwick distinguished the series and were joined by actor/director Lou Antonio and game show host Bert Convy in the two roles originated by Art Carney and Lawrence Pressman. Subsequently titled “Female Instinct.”
