DMX (1970–). Actor, rapper, producer. Born Earl Simmons, in Baltimore , Maryland , DMX moved to New York to live with an aunt and built a reputation for himself as a deejay and developed his skills as a rapper. His stage name has two possible origins. One is that he took it from the DMX digital sounds machines he used at the time; the other is that it is an acronym for Dark Man X. He signed with Columbia Records in the early 1990s and released his first single "Born Loser." He went on to appear on albums by rappers L. L. Cool J, Mase, and Lox, before signing with Ruff Ryders/Def Jam Records. He released his successful single, "Get At Me Dog," and his number one debuting solo album in 1998, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot . His first four albums debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. After appearing in the movies Belly , 1998, and Romeo Must Die , 2000, DMX became an action star in his own right, landing a roll opposite Steven Seagal in Exit Wounds , 2001. He followed with the action-packed Cradle 2 the Grave , 2003, with karate man Jet Li, and played the lead in Never Die Alone , 2004.
