ELISE, KIMBERLY (1971–). Actress. This native of Minneapolis , Minnesota , graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in communications. She performed in local theater before enrolling at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles , graduating in 1995. Since making her film debut in Set It Off , 1996, Elise has costarred in Bait , 2000, and two films opposite Denzel Washington: John Q , 2002, and The Manchurian Candidate , 2004. She won the Chicago Film Critic’s Award for Most Promising Actress and a Golden Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Beloved , 1998, and a Cable Ace Award for her performance in the telefilm The Ditchdigger’s Daughter , 1997. Her other telefilms include The Loretta Clairborne Story , 2000, and Bojangles , 2001. She has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Minnesota Independent Film Fund to direct Snow in April , based on her original screenplay. She was also selected to receive an emerging artists grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her film Cornroll .
