FOSTER, GLORIA (1936–2003). Actress. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised by her grandmother. She attended Illinois State University and taught school for two years before studying acting at the Goodman Theater School of Drama. Foster made her professional stage debut with the University of Chicago’s County Theater. In 1963, she moved to New York City. She won an Obie Award in 1963 for her performance in In White America , and received a Theater World Award for her title role portrayal in Madea . Her first Broadway role was in A Raisin in the Sun . Her film debut came in director Shirley Clark’s independent film The Cool World , 1963. Other film roles include Nothing But a Man , 1964, with Ivan Dixon, and To All My Friends on Shore , 1971, with Bill Cosby. Foster made many guest television appearances, including I Spy, The Mod Squad , where she acted with her husband and The Cool World co-star, Clarence Williams III.
