GOSSETT, LOUIS, JR. (1936–). Actor. Gossett was born in Brooklyn, New York, and began his acting career at the age of 17 when a leg injury kept him from playing basketball. He received a Donald-son Award for Best Newcomer of the year for his role in the stage play Take A Giant Step . In 1958, while performing on stage in The Desk Set , Gossett was drafted by the New York Knicks to play professional basketball, but chose to stay involved with the theater instead, appearing in more than 60 plays, including Lost in the Stars, A Raisin in the Sun , and The Blacks . On television, Gossett acted in several series, including The Nurses, The Defenders , and East Side, West Side . He won an Emmy Award in 1977 for his portrayal of Fiddler in the miniseries Roots . He brilliantly portrayed Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat in a television biopic on his life and accomplishments, and later starred as Gideon Oliver in his own dramatic television series. Gossett was seen on the big screen in such films as Skin Game , 1971; The Deep , 1977; Iron Eagle 1 & 2 , 1986 and 1988; and Diggstown , 1993. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the hard-core drill sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman , 1983.
