HAYES, ISAAC (1942–). Musician, film composer, actor. Hayes was born in Covington , Tennessee , and raised by his sharecropping grandparents who moved to Memphis when he was a teen. He sang in the church and learned to play piano and saxophone, which led him to working with the Memphis-based Stax Records house band, recording on more than 200 tunes, including "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I’m Coming," both co written by Hayes and lyricist David Porter. He began recording his own records in 1967 and his 1969 Hot Buttered Soul album was a huge hit. Hayes carved out his own image of wearing massive gold chains and sporting a shaved head, and became known as the Black Moses. His soundtrack for Gordon Parks ’ film Shaft , 1970, won a Grammy Award and went platinum. It also made Hayes the first African American film composer to win an Academy Award in a music category (Best Original Score). Originally considered for the lead role in Shaft , Hayes was later cast in the title role as a bounty hunter in Truck Turner , 1974. Other film roles followed, including Escape From New York , 1981; Dead Aim , 1987; I’m Gonna Git You Sucka , 1988; and Posse , 1993. He also provided the voice for Chef in the animated cable TV series South Park . He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
