HOOKS, ROBERT (1937–). A native of Washington, D. C., Hooks graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and moved to New York City. He made his Broadway debut in the 1962 production of Tiger Tiger Burning Bright , and became a co-founder of the Negro Ensemble Company. In film, Hooks was cast in the independently produced Sweet Love, Bitter , 1966, but his big break came from his role in Hurry Sundown , 1967. During the blaxploitation era of the 1970s, he portrayed the title role in the hard-hitting Trouble Man , 1972. On television, Hooks co-starred in the New York-based cop series NYPD , and starred in the military-based series Supercarrier , 1988. He is the father of actor/director Kevin Hooks.
