JACKSON, SAMUEL L. (1949–). Actor. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jackson studied drama at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He moved to New York City after graduation and began to work on stage and in film. He was cast in three Spike Lee films, including School Daze , 1988; Mo’ Better Blues , 1990; and Jungle Fever , 1994, for which he received the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Supporting Actor Award. Jackson also appeared in Patriot Games , 1992, and Jurassic Park , 1993. His standout performance was as a hit man in Quentin Tarrentino’s Pulp Fiction , 1994. Now a bankable star, he followed his success with key roles in Die Hard: With a Vengeance , 1995; The Great White Hype , 1996; The Caveman’s Valentine , 2001; and as a Jedi Knight in Star Wars: Episode 1—The Phantom Menace , 1999; and Episode 2—Attack of the Clones , 2002.
