McGEE, VONETTA (1940–). Actress. While attending San Francisco State University, McGee joined the socially conscious theater troupe Aldridge Player’s West, and began her training on stage. After winning the Miss Bronze California beauty contest, she was offered small parts in several independent European films. She returned to the States during the blaxploitation film boom and landed a part in The Lost Man , 1969. Her talent and beauty led to larger roles in Melinda , 1972; Blackula , 1972; Hammer , 1972; and Shaft in Africa , 1973. She shared the title role in Thomasine & Bushrod , 1974, with then-boyfriend Max Julien. She guest starred on numerous television shows, such as Different Strokes, Magnum P. I. , and Amen , and had a recurring role on Cagney & Lacey . She is married to actor Carl Lumbly, and they played a married couple in Charles Burnett ’s To Sleep With Anger , 1990.
