MURPHY, EDDIE (1961–). Actor, comedian. Born in Brooklyn , New York , Murphy’s talent to make people laugh began early, and he was a stand up comic by age 15. He landed a prestigious spot on NBC’s Saturday Night Live , seasons 1980–84, and was a powerful mainstay of those years. His feature film debut came in the highly successful 48 Hrs. , 1982, and he quickly became a major box office draw. He went on to star in several high-grossing films, including Another 48 Hrs. , 1990, and the Beverly Hill Cop series of films. Murphy made his directorial debut with Harlem Nights , 1989, and through Eddie Murphy Productions he has produced several sitcom pilots, the made-for-TV movie The Kid Who Loved Christmas , 1990, and the CBS sitcom The Royal Family starring vintage comedian Redd Foxx.
