Perry, Tyler (1969–)
PERRY, TYLER (1969–). Actor, director, writer, producer. He was born in New Orleans , Louisiana , and began writing plays when he was 18. He created and portrays the character of Madea, a gruff, grandmotherly, sharp witted, no-nonsense, pistol-toting woman who speaks her mind with reckless abandon. He began to tour the country with a series of religious based plays that featured this popular character and videotaped the stage productions for a straight to video release. After gaining notoriety and racking up hefty video and DVD sales, Perry teamed with producer Reuben Cannon to make more elaborate feature-film versions. They have built a production studio in Atlanta , Georgia , to achieve this task, and to produce their original television sitcom House of Payne .
