ROOTS . 1977. (TV) 573 min. Drama. An eight-part television miniseries based on Alex Haley ‘s best-selling book that recounts his family history all the way back to Africa. The series aired for eight consecutive nights on ABC-TV and broke viewing records around the world. The story begins with Kunta Kinte, a young boy in a Gambian village in West Africa, who is completing his manhood trials. He is captured by slave traders and taken to America, where he is sold into slavery. From his story, to his daughter’s, to the stories of his grandchildren, the cruelty and brutality of slavery is unmasked, and the strength and fortitude of a resilient African people is revealed. The sequel Roots: The Next Generation aired on ABC in 1979.
