Silvera, Frank (1914–1970)

SILVERA, FRANK (1914–1970). Actor. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and became an actor and stage director during the Harlem Renaissance. He began his stage career with the American Negro Theater in Harlem, and was also involved with the famed Actor’s Studio. His light complexion allowed him to play non ethnic roles. His television guest appearances include Bonanza, The Twilight Zone, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, I Spy, The Wild Wild West , and Hawaii Five-O . He was very active and vocal during the civil rights movement and encouraged his industry associates to support the cause of African Americans as well. The Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop Foundation, Inc. was founded in his honor to sponsor up-and-coming playwrights.
