SIMPSON, O. J. (1949–). Football player, athlete, actor. He was born as Orenthal James Simpson in San Francisco, California. Simpson became a football star at the University of Southern California and was awarded the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1968. He gained a record setting 2,000 yards rushing during the 1973 season with the Buffalo Bills, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He began acting in such films as The Towering Inferno , 1974, and the Naked Gun trilogy. As the spokesman for Hertz Rent a Car, he sprinted through airports, and often announced on ABC’s Monday Night Football. Simpson starred in a few failed TV pilots, such as Cocaine and Blue Eyes , and was cast on the syndicated series Frogmen . His career came to a halt when he was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. In October of 1995, he was found not guilty after a highly publicized criminal trial, yet he was found liable for their deaths in civil court.
