SNIPES, WESLEY (1962–). Actor. Born in Orlando, Florida, and raised in the Bronx, New York, he appeared in the off Broadway production of The Me Nobody Knows at age 12. He was also interested in dance and attended New York’s High School for the Performing Arts for a while, but completed his education back in Orlando. Snipes enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase on a theater scholarship and continued to perform in off-Broadway productions, such as Death and the King’s Horsemen, Execution of Justice , and The Boys of Winter . He landed several minor roles in films, including Wildcats , 1986; Major League , 1989; and King of New York , 1990, but it was his role as a rival musician and band leader in Mo’ Better Blues , 1990, that led to his leading-man status. Lead roles in New Jack City , 1991, and Jungle Fever , 1991, soon followed, and he continued on in films like White Men Can’t Jump , 1992; Passenger 57 , 1992; and Sugar Hill , 1994. Snipes ventured deep into horror as a half-human, half-vampire in the highly successful films Blade and Blade 2 .
