WILLIAMS, CLARENCE, III (1939–). Actor. Williams became interested in acting as a teenager while attending a local branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).After spending two years in the U.S. Air Force, he began his acting career in The Long Dream and worked often on the Broadway stage during the 1960s. His first film role was in director Shirley Clarke’s independent film The Cool World , 1963, and he received national prominence as Link Hayes, a hip undercover cop in the hit TV series The Mod Squad . Later film roles include Purple Rain , 1984; Tales from the Hood , 1995; Hoodlum , 1997; and Life , 1999. He married actress Gloria Foster.
