WILLIAMSON, FRED (1938–). Football player, actor, producer. Born in Gary, Indiana, Williamson studied architecture and played college ball at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. An all pro defensive cornerback, he was nicknamed “The Hammer” for his hard-hitting style of play and took to the field for the Kansas City Chiefs and for the Oakland Raiders during the 1960s. By 1972, he was in Hollywood starring opposite Diahann Carrol on her TV series Julia . On film, he was cast as Spearchucker Jones in director Robert Altman’s film M*A*S*H , and in Otto Preminger’s Tell Me You Love Me, Junie Moon . He became interested in producing and directing and set up his own production company, Po’ Boy Productions, in 1974. Williamson hit hard during the 1970s blaxploitation -era films by starring as That Man Bolt , 1973; Black Caesar , 1973; and in the Legend of Nigger Charley . His other action-packed films included Three the Hard Way , 1974, and One Down, Two to Go , 1972. His company produced the action-packed retro film Original Gangstas , 1996. On television, he has worked in Police Story, The Equalizer , and in the sitcoms Amen and The Jaimie Foxx Show . He has continued to act and produce films in the United States and internationally.
