sodom angels lot’s uncle

The nephew of *Abraham, Lot appears in Genesis. Selected episodes from his life are found in early Christian and later medieval Bible manuscripts, mosaics, and stained glass. He traveled and lived with his uncle for a number of years, but the two parted company in Canaan, where Abraham gave  Lot first choice of land. Lot settled in the fertile region near the (not yet) Dead Sea in the city of *Sodom and later had to be rescued by his uncle from northern invaders. When *God decided to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of the wickedness of the people and sent two *angels to do so, Lot welcomed the angels (mistaking them for travelers) into his home. When the men of Sodom demanded that he hand over the strangers to them, Lot offered his daughters instead. The angels struck the men of Sodom with blindness when they attacked Lot’s house and then advised Lot to flee with his family and not look back. The cities were then destroyed by fire, but *Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. Believing that their elderly father was the last man left on earth and eager to perpetuate their race, Lot’s daughters tricked him into having incestuous relations with them by getting him drunk when they were living in a cave in the hills. Their offspring became the East Jordan peoples of Moab and Ammon.
