Prophets

testament christian figures linked

Prophets are those who reveal *God’s word to humans or speak about the future. The term refers to numerous divinely inspired Old Testament Page 205  figures who conveyed God’s will by their words or actions and whose deeds (if not, in all cases, purported writings) are contained in the biblical books named after them. The Four Major Prophets (longest books) are *Isaiah, *Jeremiah, *Ezekiel, and *Daniel. The Twelve Minor Prophets are *Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, *Jonah, Micah, *Nahum, *Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, *Zechariah, and Malachi. Following *Christ’s several references to and reliance upon Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah, New Testament and later church writers assiduously linked the Hebrew prophetic writings to Christian events, emphasizing and interpreting the fulfillment of the Old Testament texts in the Christian religion . The Four Major Prophets were thus symbolically linked with the *Four Evangelists, and the Twelve Minor Prophets were linked with the Twelve *Apostles. The prophets of the Old Testament hence play a critical role in Christian art and literature. In art, they may appear as aged, bearded figures bearing symbolic attributes or scrolls inscribed with their prophecies relevant to Christianity. They appear in scenes of the *Last Judgment, on the Byzantine *iconostasis, and in numerous other Christian artistic contexts as busts, full-length figures, or in narrative vignettes.
