Baud-Bovy, Samuel, Swiss music educator; b. Geneva, Nov. 27, 1906; d. there, Nov. 2, 1986. He studied at the Univ. of Geneva; after studying violin with Closset at the Geneva Cons., conducting with Nilius and music history with Adler in Vienna, composition with Dukas and musicology with Pirro in Paris, and conducting with Weingartner in Basel and Scherchen in Geneva, he returned to the Univ. of Geneva to take his doctorat ès lettres in 1936. He was an orch. teacher (1933–73) and a conductor (1942–73) at the Geneva Cons., where he also served as co-principal (1947–57) and principal (1957–70); was also director of studies (from 1931) and an asst. prof. (from 1942) at the Univ. of Geneva. From 1961 to 1963 he was president of the International Soc. for Music Education. He was an authority on Greek folk music, of which he publ. several collections. In addition to many scholarly articles in music journals, he publ. the books La chanson populaire grecque du Dodécanèse (Paris, 1936), Études sur la chanson cleftique (Athens, 1958), and Essai sur la chanson populaire grecque (Athens, 1983).
