Ralph Lauren was born as Ralph Lifshitz in The Bronx to Jewish immigrant parents. His father painted houses. Though Lauren grew up without fashion, he would go on to create it for the wealthy. From a young age, Lauren had an affinity for fashion. He began to work after school to earn money to buy pricey suits. His attention to trends made him well known among his peers. Ralph Lauren graduated in 1957 from DeWitt Clinton High. Lauren stated in his yearbook that he wanted to be a millionaire and was one of a number of highly successful alumni; Robert Klein, Colin Powell, Stan Lee, and Burt Lancaster graduated from the high school as well. Ralph decided to change his last name from Lifshitz to Lauren prior to attending college. His brother still held on to the family name for a number of years.

Education

Ralph Lauren attended Baruch College as a Business major, but dropped out two years later. He served in the United States Army and was discharged in 1968. Later that same year, Lauren married Ricky Low-Beer. Though Lauren did not attend fashion school, he worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesperson. During this time, Lauren created the Polo label of neckties. He would later buy this name from his first backer, Norman Hilton. Ralph Lauren now oversees his fashion empire which has become a billion-dollar effort. Lauren remodeled the Rhinelander Mansion into his first store for Polo Ralph Lauren. Lauren’s home also appeared in House & Garden that year. Polo Ralph Lauren became a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange in the early 1990s.

Personal Life

Ralph Lauren and his wife, Ricky, are the parents of two sons, Andrew and David, and one daughter, Dylan. David Lauren works as an executive at Polo Ralph Lauren. Dylan Lauren is the owner of a posh candy shop called Dylan’s Candy Bar. Andrew Lauren is involved in the motion picture industry.

Trivia

A number of biographies have been written about Ralph Lauren, including ones penned by Colin MacDowell, Jeffrey Trachtenberg, and Michael Gross. Ralph Lauren is a notorious collector of classic cars. His collections have won best in show nods at the illustrious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on a number of occassions. Lauren’s car collection has even been displayed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Ralph Lauren became the first designer to officially outfit participants at Wimbledon in 2006. Lauren was tapped to redesign the uniforms for ballboys, line judges, court judges, etc. The Wimbledon logo was also redesigned for this purpose. Lauren’s Polo brand is used in a range of products including clothing for men and women as well as a number of perfumes and colognes.
