CFA Image Zooming

scale gray spectral camera

Definition: A zooming solution operating on a gray-scale CFA sensor image generates an enlarged gray-scale, mosaic-like, image.

Since the cost of a digital camera rapidly increases based on its optical zooming capabilities, to keep it at a reasonable level, camera manufacturers produce cameras capable of performing digital zooming. This is especially important for cost-effective, imaging-enabled, consumer electronic devices, such as mobiles phones and wireless personal digital assistants (PDAs). In such a single-sensor device, camera image zooming can be performed before or after the demosaicking step. Unlike color (demosaicked) image zooming by zooming on the CFA image directly the designers avoid processing recovered RGB vectors where imperfections or noise introduced during demosaicking may create visual impairments. A zooming solution operating on a gray-scale CFA sensor image generates an enlarged gray-scale, mosaic-like, image (Figures 1-2).

An image zooming technique performs spatial interpolation since it: i) enlarges the spatial resolution of the input image, ii) completes the missing data from the spatially adjacent data using some type of the interpolation operations, and iii) preserves the spectral representation of the input image. The characteristics of the CFA zooming procedure are essentially determined by the edge-sensing mechanism and the spectral model used in the procedure. The edge-sensing mechanism is utilized to preserve the sharpness and structural information of the enlarged image. The spectral model for CFA image processing is employed to preserve the spectral correlation between the spatially shifted color components. Since a CFA image zooming technique produces a gray-scale, mosaic-like, image (Figure 2), it should be succeeded by a demosaicking solution in order for a color output to be produced.
