Multimedia Project Planning

team aim treatment requirements

Definition: Any significant multimedia project involves a core team that includes: producer, writer, and director, who work with other personnel, such as, programmer, photographer, videographer, and voiceover artists.

Multimedia project planning is a complex problem (England and Finney, 1999). Any significant multimedia project involves a core team that includes: producer, writer, and director, who work with other personnel, such as, programmer, photographer, videographer, and voiceover artists (Elin, 2001). Close coordination between these team members is essential. The Multimedia Design and Planning Pyramid (MUDPY) is a five-level model (Figure 1) in which the top three levels comprise the project planning process (Sharda, 2004). The planning process should begin by articulating a clear Concept statement, and then expand it into Goals and Requirements.

Concept statement should give a succinct overview of the entire project, and become its guiding “mantra”.

Goals can be articulated as an Aim and a list of Objectives. Aim should be a short statement that embodies the intention and the purpose of the project. Objectives should be the list of project outcomes, or deliverables derived from the project Aim; and listed as a series of dot-points.

Requirements refer to the tasks that the system must perform. Involving the users in deriving the requirements is very important. Target Audience should be specified based on factors such as age group, profession, interests, special needs etc., as these influence the treatment. Treatment refers to the look and feel of a multimedia presentation, and that of its various sections. The first level of treatment specification can be given as the percentage of each content type, that is, text, audio, still images, animation, and video. These can then be elaborated in terms of the quality of presentation of each component that relates to its digital coding aspects.

Planning is followed by design and production of the multimedia system. The relationship between various Planning, Design, and Production aspects is shown in the MUDPY model.
