Definition: To realize potential of the Semantic Web, scientists and information technologists must forge new models of cooperation and new thinking must go into the funding and dissemination of this next generation of scientific tools on the Web .

As modern science grows in complexity and scope, the need for more collaboration between scientists at different institutions, in different areas, and across scientific disciplines becomes increasingly important. An emerging generation of World Wide Web technology known as the Semantic Web offers tremendous potential for collaborative and interdisciplinary science. However, to realize this potential, scientists and information technologists must forge new models of cooperation and new thinking must go into the funding and dissemination of this next generation of scientific tools on the Web. This article outlines several such tools.

Sesame

Sesame is an open source RDF database with support for RDF Schema inferencing and querying. Originally, it was developed by Aduna (then known as Administrator) as a research prototype for the EU research project On To Knowledge . It is now more mature and maintained by Aduna in cooperation with NLnet Foundation , developers from OntoText , and a number of volunteer developers who contribute ideas, bug reports and fixes. Sesame has been designed with flexibility in mind. It can be deployed on top of a variety of storage systems (relational databases, in-memory, file systems, keyword indexers, etc.), and offers a large scala of tools to developers to leverage the power of RDF and RDF Schema, such as a flexible access API, which supports both local and remote (through HTTP, SOAP or RMI) access, and several query languages of which SeRQL is the most powerful.

ICS-FORTH RDFSuite

ICS-FORTH R&D activities focus on high-level and scalable software tools enabling the realization of the full potential of the Semantic Web:

  • The Validating RDF Parser (VRP): The First RDF Parser supporting semantic validation of both resource descriptions and schemas
  • The RDF Schema Specific DataBase (RSSDB): The First RDF Store using schema knowledge to automatically generate an Object-Relational (SQL3) representation of RDF metadata and load resource descriptions.
  • The RDF Query Language (RQL): The First Declarative Language for uniformly querying RDF schemas and resource descriptions.

Jena

Jena is a popular Java-based Semantic Web framework. Some of its features are:

  • Statement centric methods for manipulating an RDF model as a set of RDF triples
  • Resource centric methods for manipulating an RDF model as a set of resources with properties
  • Cascading method calls for more convenient programming
  • Built in support for RDF containers – bag, alt and seq
  • Extensible resources – the application can extend the behaviour of resources
  • Integrated parsers and writers for RDF/XML (ARP), N3 and N-TRIPLES
  • Support for typed literals
