Lack of sleep makes them fatigued and tired, resulting in a decreased performance at work. Most sleep troubles can be avoided by just changing the mattress you sleep on. With companies coming up with fancy names for mattresses and costs going up as high as $5000, is there such a thing as a cheap mattress set?
There are several things to consider when shopping for a mattress, the first being the price. Experts recommend that mattresses should be about comfort; the price doesn’t matter. So, if you go to a store and find a comfortable mattress for $200, it is fine. You shouldn’t worry about any additional features that the salesman is trying to impress sell to you. Nearly all mattress companies like Serta, Sealy and Simmons get their coils from one company, Leggett and Platt, and coils are the most important feature.
A mattress needs to have just two things right – good coil count and dense foam padding. Coil counts are quite a confusing measure because most companies use a different number and consumers never know what the numbers are. Second, the foam padding or the thickness of the mattress should be enough to support your back and give you a comfortable night’s sleep. The market is rife with thicker mattresses, some even as thick at 2 feet, but thickness is not an important factor. There is no vital difference in a thinner mattress as opposed to a thicker one. Mattress companies also market on ploys like back pain, but back pain is not related to your mattress unless you’re sleeping on broken coils.
Consumer Reports recommends the following when shopping for a cheap mattress set:
1. Check your mattress before you buy it by taking a 15 minute nap. Do not feel uncomfortable about doing this in the store; you can even bring your pillow if you want. Consumer Reports recommends that you do this because you are investing in a mattress for the next 8-10 years so you must buy something that is comfortable and makes you feel well rested.
2. Make sure you buy the mattress from a store that offers an exchange or a return policy. Most leading companies provide a 10 to 20-year guarantee, but ignore that and instead just look for a good 30 to 60-day return policy. Some stores get away by offering something called a ‘comfort guarantee’ – don’t get fooled by this because a store that offers a comfort guarantee will never give you your money back. You will only be able to exchange the mattress for an equal or higher value.
3. Never pay full price for a mattress. Tthey are usually overpriced in stores like Macy’s or Sears. Tod Marks at Consumer Reports says that you should definitely look for mattress sales and be able to get as much as 50% off.
Keep these points in mind when shopping for a cheap mattress set. Bigger brand names have bigger price tags but what matters most is comfort, whether you get it from a $5000 mattress or a $200 one.
