Dmv Los Angeles - Los Angeles DMV Services

The Los Angeles DMV consists of a single location in the city proper. It is considered a field office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The California DMV system was created in 1914 to issue license plates. A major overhaul in the system was passed in 1923, and in 1935, the California Vehicle Act was officially codified. Today, much of the burden of the field offices has been relieved by the addition of mail and online services, but the field offices, such as the Los Angeles DMV still play a critical role.

The California DMV is responsible for the registration of 33 million vehicles in the state and the licensing of 23 million drivers, 5.9 million of which are in Los Angeles. The fees and taxes for the rights of driving and owning a vehicle amount to department revenues of $6.5 billion. The major functions of the Los Angeles DMV are to carry out the following:

• Issue certificates of title to vehicle owners
• Register the ownership of all vehicles and vessels on an annual basis
• Issue licenses to drive private and commercial vehicles
• Issue individual state identification cards
• Maintain driving records of every licensed driver
• Oversee the California Financial Responsibility Law
• License and regulate driving and driver improvement schools
• License and regulate vehicle manufacturers, distributors, and dealers
• Investigate complaints made by consumers
• Maintain records of all actions and transactions
• Collect fees and taxes regarding motor vehicles

Most consumer traffic at the Los Angeles DMV is due to those seeking new driver’s licenses, renewing existing driver’s licenses, and registering vehicles. Although license renewal and vehicle registration renewal are more easily done online now, many drivers either do not have access to the internet or they prefer to complete the process in person. Also, if additional information or documentation is required, it is necessary to visit the Los Angeles DMV branch office.
