Cisco Wireless Router - Choosing a Cisco Wireless Router

Nowadays, many homes that have a high-speed internet connection also have a wireless router. The wireless router is the device, in the form of a small box with one or more antennae, connected to the modem that allows the internet signal to be broadcast through airwaves. Wireless routers make connecting to the internet easily and cheaply since they don’t require any wires to be run directly to the computer. This allows you to take a laptop from room-to-room and even outside while still maintaining an internet connection.

One of the top manufacturers of wireless routers is Cisco. Cisco Systems began in 1984 by a married couple who worked in computer operations at Stanford University. The company had always focused on router technology, and they were a pioneer in the field. While the company focuses on commercial routers, several Cisco wireless routers are available for the home market. Their home market wireless product line grew when Cisco acquired the company Linksys in 2003. Until 2009, Cisco wireless routers continued to use the Linksys brand name. Today, the company is moving toward strengthening their corporate name, so Cisco wireless routers for home use come in lines without the Linksys name.

Current models of Cisco wireless router belong to one of three product lines:

Cisco Valet – The Valet series is Cisco’s top-shelf product for home wireless routers. They are designed in a sleek, streamlined, aesthetic style with internal antennae. They are simple to set up and have an automatic Easy Setup Key. Products include the Valet, the Valet Plus, and the Valet Connector wireless adapter.

Cisco Linksys E-Series – The Linksys E-series of Cisco wireless router has long been a standard in many homes. The series today incorporates models utilizing the latest technology. Like the Valet, the E-series has one of the best aesthetic designs of any router series. Products include the following Wireless-N routers:

• E1000 – This is the entry-level Cisco wireless router. It utilizes the 2.4 GHz band with Fast Ethernet (10/100) ports.
• E2000 – This router has an additional 5 GHz band and uses Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000).
• E3000 – This is the top-of-the-line of the E-series. It uses either 2.4 or 5.0 GHz bands, has Gigabit Ethernet ports, and an additional USB port.
