Santee is a city in northeast San Diego County, 12 miles from downtown San Diego and the San Diego Airport. The city has an estimated population of 54,709. It is part of a group of cities collectively known as East County that also includes El Cajon, Lakeside, La Mesa, and Spring Valley. Development of Santee began in the 1950s as a bedroom community for San Diego, however, it was not officially incorporated until 1980. The city is known for being primarily white, conservative, and upscale.
