“Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!” From the infamous words of Mickey Mouse on the first Mickey Mouse Club TV show on Oct. 3 1955 to the recent revival of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in 2006, Mickey and the other Disney characters have become icons around the globe. The brainchild of Walt Disney and Bill Cottrell, the character of Mickey Mouse and the Disney Fan Club helped create the phenomenon of Disney. Nowadays fans young and old dream of the epitome of all things Disney—Walt Disney resorts.

In the United States, Walt Disney resorts emulate a wide array of settings and themes. The original Walt Disney resort, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California features 2 theme parks, Disney’s California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park. Visitors to the Walt Disney resorts in California usually walk through the attractions using a multi-day pass for both parks. Park entrances are close to each other with a tram in the center. In the same central location, visitors will find the Downtown Disney District and 3 Disneyland Resort Hotels. Ticket booths for both parks are also available in the central location.

Set near Orlando, Florida Walt Disney World Resort covers nearly 40 square miles making it the largest recreational resort in the entire world. Within Walt Disney World there are 24 themed hotels with other hotels available. Four theme parks, 2 water parks, a campground, 2 spas and a fitness center round out some of the highlights in this famous Walt Disney resort. Since the original theme park, Magic Kingdom, opened in 1971 the resort has added Epcot Center, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The two Walt Disney resorts in California and Florida were intended to contrast each other as Disneyland was originally a one-day vacation spot. On the other hand, Disney World consists of a more extensive vacation venue with more sports and entertainment features offered.

Walt Disney resorts are not limited to the United States. People throughout the world enjoy the Disney experience. Opening in 1983 in Urayasy, Chiba, Japan, Tokyo Disney Resort offers Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea parks, a major dining and entertainment area and resort hotels. The Tokyo Walt Disney resort claims the largest parking structure in the world. The resort is licensed by the Walt Disney Company in conjunction with the owner, Oriental Land Company.

Following Japan’s success, Disneyland Paris was the next Walt Disney resort to open outside the U.S. In 1992 Euro Disney Resort opened in a suburb of Paris, France offering 2 theme parks, an entertainment and shopping area called Disney Village, 2 resort hotels and a golf course. Taking up 5000 acres, this Walt Disney resort is managed by Euro Disney S.C.A. and owned in part by the Walt Disney Company. More resort hotels have been added.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort joined the international list of Walt Disney resorts in 2005 as the fifth resort. Set in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, it is operated by Hong Kong International Theme Parks, a company owned by the Hong Kong Government and the Walt Disney Company. It has 2 parks and 2 resort hotels.

The sixth Walt Disney resort required approval from the central government of China which it received in 2009. Shanghai Disneyland Resort is located in the Pudong district of Shanghai. Its anticipated opening is supposed to happen in late 2013 to early 2014. Other ventures for the Walt Disney Company continue through expansion to many existing Walt Disney resorts as well as new proposals.

The impact of Walt Disney as an icon in the field of entertainment is seen throughout the world. From resort hotels to theme parks or television shows to cruise ships, Walt Disney is recognized as one of the most familiar global brand names.
