Of all of New York’s dazzling attractions, none is more sought after than a prime spot in Times Square for New Year’s Eve. Over two million tourists and locals flock to New York City for this December 31 tradition to watch the ball drop and signal the start of the New Year. The streets of New York are packed with millions celebrating on this phenomenal night. If you’re looking to ring in the New Year with millions of revelers belting out Auld Lang Syne and covered in confetti, there are a few things you need to know.

Lodging

Book early to get the best accommodations for your New Year’s Eve celebration. The prime hotels with a view of the action are usually booked a year in advance, so plan accordingly. The New York Marriott Marquis hotel is located in the center of all the action and will give you the best view of the square from the comfort of your room. Simply stepping out of the front door of the hotel will also put you in a prime position to join the festivities.

Other Times Square hotels include the Hilton Times Square, The Westin New York at Times Square and the Paramount Hotel Times Square.

Secure Your Spot

Getting to Times Square early is the key to having the best view of the ball drop. Most revelers start gathering in the early afternoon to get the best spot. Viewing areas fill up quickly, and late arrivals may have to view the ball drop from screens set up on overflow streets. At approximately 6:00 p.m., the ball is raised to its position at the top of the flagpole at One Times Square. It’s best to take the subway to the festivities, as most streets in the area will be closed to traffic.

Throughout the afternoon, there are activities to keep the crowd entertained, including live performances, televised broadcasts and celebrity appearances.

If you’re lucky, you can view the ball drop from one of the many restaurants in Times Square with a view of the action. The Olive Garden Times Square offers an annual tickets-only event that includes dinner and a prime view of the ball drop. Other restaurants include the Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory, Sbarro Pizza and TGI Friday.

Be Prepared

It is important to note that there are no portable restrooms in Times Square during the New Year’s Eve celebration. Food vendors are not allowed to operate on city streets during the day, although there are a number of restaurants that are open for business. It’s best to visit with a buddy who can hold your place if you need to leave to use the restroom or get food.

Dress warmly. You will be standing outside in sub-freezing temperatures for several hours before the ball drop at midnight. Dress in layers and insulate yourself to remain comfortable for the entire evening. Avoid caffeine or alcohol that can cause dehydration.

Finally the moment will arrive that you’ve been anticipating for many hours. At exactly 11:59 p.m. ET, the ball will begin its 60-second descent down the 70-foot flagpole, reaching the bottom at exactly midnight and dumping Times Square with a ton of colored confetti.

The New Year’s Eve NYC experience is one that won’t be soon forgotten. From standing in the middle of the world’s most well known square block with millions of other partiers ringing in the New Year, to being covered in confetti, there is no other celebration that compares to New Year’s Eve NYC.
