Outdoor Patio Umbrella - How to Care for Your Outdoor Patio Umbrella

canopy soap frame clean

Your outdoor patio umbrella will look better and last longer if you take the time to clean and care for it properly. If you don’t take care of your patio umbrella, it will become dingy and grimy over time. Like anything else, an outdoor umbrella will collect and accumulate dust and dirt if left alone.

By cleaning your outdoor patio umbrella regularly, you can keep the dust from building up on it and keep it looking nice. Most patio umbrellas can be cleaned using mild soap, such as dishwashing soap, and water. Don’t use a soap that is harsh or abrasive; it could damage the fabric of the umbrella. You can use an ordinary washcloth to wash your outdoor umbrella in most cases. If it doesn’t come clean, try scrubbing the difficult area gently with a scrub brush. Don’t scrub harder than is needed, though. Hard scrubbing could damage the umbrella.

The frame of the umbrella is cleaned in the same way as the canopy, with mild soap and water. Once you have finished cleaning both the frame and canopy, leave your patio umbrella open and set it in a place where there is plenty of sunlight until it has thoroughly dried. Check to make sure the frame is completely dry, since any moisture left on it could cause it to rust. Use a towel to dry up any remaining moisture if needed.

If you’d rather not mess with the soap and water, there is another way to clean your outdoor patio umbrella. You can use a power washer. Be careful with this method, though. Many power washers are powerful enough to rip a hole in your canopy. Start spraying on a low setting and gradually increase the pressure as needed to remove the dirt and grime from your canopy and frame. Remember to let the umbrella dry thoroughly before folding it up.

The canopy of your outdoor umbrella may also be able to be removed and washed in a commercial washing machine, like you find at the laundromat. It is important to check the label first to make sure your canopy is washable before doing this. If it is not machine washable, trying to wash it this way could destroy it.

You can also extend the life of your outdoor patio umbrella by taking some preventative measures. If you leave your patio umbrella out and open all summer long, it may begin to fade due to excessive exposure to sunlight. It is a good idea to close up your umbrella when it is not in use to protect it from the sun. If you have a cover to put over it, be sure to use it.

It is especially important to put your patio umbrella away when there is heavy weather coming. If you have ever used an umbrella to protect yourself from the rain when it is windy, you know that the wind has a tendency to catch the umbrella, and if it is strong enough it will turn it inside out. The same thing can happen to an outdoor umbrella. Make sure your umbrella is put away before each storm to ensure that it won’t be damaged by the wind.

If you have a wooden patio umbrella that is looking worse for wear, you can make it look like new again by refinishing the wood. This task is recommended only for experienced wood workers however. If you have never done anything like this before, it is probably better to take your umbrella to a professional to have the work done. If you do it yourself, be sure to disassemble the umbrella completely and refinish each one separately. If you try to refinish your outdoor umbrella without taking it apart, the pieces will become stuck together when the varnish dries.

Proper care and maintenance of your outdoor patio umbrella will extend its life so that you can enjoy using it much longer. It will also save you money, because you will not need to replace your patio umbrella as often as you would if you did not take good care of it.
