Headsets were invented by Nathaniel Baldwin, a Stanford University student, in 1910.
The original goal was to develop an efficient communication tool for pilots. However,
there was little interest in the invention until World War II, when the Army bought 100
headsets.

In recent years, however, the headsets for phones have been found to be a significantly
useful tool in improving business productivity. One study showed that using a headset for
a phone improved efficiency by over 40%, due to the fact that using the headset frees the
hands to take notes, locate information, or use the computer.

Telephone headsets also improve communication by making the voice clearer for both
parties, as well as eliminating background noise.

There are several different styles of headsets for phones. On-the ear models fit over your
ear, and are lightweight and small. Over-the-head models fit over the head and may have

There are several common situations where a headset for a phone use is highly recommended:

• Using a telephone and computer at the same time;
• While making lengthy or frequent calls;
• When your hands must be free to do other things;
• When the employee holds the phone between neck and shoulder; and
• While driving.

Many states are passing laws requiring motorists using cell phones to have hands-free
headsets in order to minimize distractions and improve driving safety.

Most wireless office headsets for phones offer more than eight hours of talk time so that
the system can be used throughout office hours, and then recharge overnight. Systems are designed
to be both comfortable and ergonomically safer.

There are some choices to be made when purchasing headsets. Besides choosing the
style of headset for your phone (how it fits on your head), you can choose from a regular or a
noise-canceling microphone. The regular microphone will cost less, but it will pick up more background noise.
The noise-canceling microphone is perfect for noisy environments: the busy call center,
or the home office with the crying child and barking dog in the background. When using a noise-canceling microphone, you have to make sure the microphone is directly in front of your mouth; if it’s below the chin,
you won’t be heard.

Finally there is the choice of a one, or two ear headset. A lot depends on the noise level of your office environment. Two-ear models help minimize distractions from background noise. You might also need to consider whether you are trying to communicate with others while on the phone. A one-ear model
may be the best headset choice in that scenario.

Using a headset for your phone can dramatically improve productivity and alleviate that “pain in the neck”
from trying to hold the phone with your shoulder while you’re fumbling around for a pencil to take notes.
