Air Cleaners Purifiers - Tips on Air Purifier Features

Breathing smog and other air pollutants outdoors can cause health problems. Those who suffer from allergies also face pollutants inside the home. Effective air cleaners and purifiers can relieve suffering by taking pet allergens, dust, smoke and odors out of the air.

There are four main types of purifiers on the market including HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arresting) filters, electronic ionizers, UV purifiers and ozone generators. Some air cleaners use more than one technique. According to experts HEPA air purifiers are by far the most effective air purifiers. HEPA filters trap particles and use a fan to pull particles through the filter. HEPA purifiers do not produce extra oxygen. The air returned is clean after particles are removed.

Electronic ionizers do produce a small amount of oxygen and are not highly recommended by consumer agencies. This type of air cleaner reverses the particles and removes them from the air but particles can end up on floors and furniture requiring another step to remove the pollutants.

UV purifiers use an ultraviolet light to neutralize biological pollutants like bacteria, mold and dust mites. In order to be effective, UV purifiers require a filter and fan. Experts contend that these air cleaners do not give enough exposure time to actually kill the contamination.

Ozone generators produce large amounts of oxygen but do not remove allergens. Large amounts of added ozone can effectively reduce odors from fire or smoking but can also make lung problems or asthma worse. Some medical devices use this technique but an air purifier is not labeled as a medical device. Due to possible lung damage, ozone generators were recently banned in California.

Experts recommend checking the CADR (clean air delivery rate) of any air cleaner you are considering. The CADR measures the removal of particles and clean air filtered back into a room. The recommended CADR number for an effective air purifier should be at least 2/3 of the room’s square footage.

Before you invest in an air cleaner, check out the type of purifier used in the system. The HEPA filter appears to be the most effective method of ridding the air of pet dander, pollen, mold spores and dust. A real HEPA filter traps 99.97% of pollutant particles. Double check the name of the filter to make sure it says HEPA and not HEPA-type or another variation. The word “true” appears before the word “HEPA” in authentic HEPA air purifiers.

Air cleaners and purifiers can help allergy sufferers by removing pollutants from the air. But, be careful. Look for products recommended by consumer agencies. Savvy consumers should be aware of the wide range of prices and variations of air purifying systems available in order to avoid falling for glitzy ads making misleading claims.
