Lows Home Improvement - A Career at Lows Home Improvement: is it for You? - Lowe’s History, Lowe’s Today, Lowe’s Employee Benefits

time employees company receive

Firstly, we realize that the actual spelling is Lowe’s, but Lows Home Improvement is a very common misspelling. However you spell it though, if you’re considering a career at Lowe’s Home Improvement, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll take a look at Lowe’s history, their workplace environment, and their employee benefits and compensation.

Lowe’s History

Lowe’s started back in 1946 as a small hardware store in North Carolina. Foreseeing a big boom in building after the end of World War II, co-owner Carl Buchan bought out his brother-in-law James Lowe and started focusing only on hardware essentials, appliances, and other items that would be useful to the thousands of new building projects that were bound to spring up. Carl’s strategy worked, and the company grew rapidly over the next decade. It went public in 1961.

Lowe’s Today

Lowe’s continued its exceptional growth into what it has become today, often being compared to the success of retail giants like Wal-Mart. Today Lowe’s has more than 1,700 stores in the US, Canada, and Mexico. They have been honored in their efforts to educate consumers about the benefits of energy efficiency, winning eight consecutive ENERGY STAR awards for sustained excellence in retail. They have maintained this progressive attitude in other areas of their company, too, including HR and employment.

Lowe’s Employee Benefits

For starters, Lowe’s makes a great effort to include both full- and part-time workers in all of its company benefits. All full-time employees receive health, dental, and vision coverage, and part time employees can become eligible to receive health benefits, too. Thanksgiving and Christmas are paid holidays, and other major holidays pay holiday time. Full-time employees that work on holidays receive eight hours of holiday time that can be banked and used as a floating holiday, and part-time employees receive four hours. Part-time employees can qualify for 40 hours of vacation time after 180 days of service, and in increasing amounts as their time with the company increases.

Lowe’s also offers a great 401(k) program that becomes available after 6 months of employment. You can choose from a large selection of mutual funds to reflect your individual needs. They also offer 3-6% contribution matching to help you build up your account.

And of course, if you’re a home-improvement addict then you’ll love the 10% employee discount. This discount applies to all employees, whether part-time, full-time, or temporary. A summer part-time job here can be a great way to fund any big projects that you have on your list, and you’ll get a great deal on supplies at the same time!

Many people are surprised to learn about the comprehensive benefits that are offered to Lowe’s employees. It’s no joke – for full details and to find local job openings, check out Lowe’s career page online.
