Culver City, California is a small city on the west side of Los Angeles County. The population of Culver City is 38,816. The area where Culver City is located began as a staging area for Union troops during the Civil War. After the camp was abandoned in 1862, the area remained deserted until Harry Culver began efforts to create a city in his name in 1913. Only 4 years later, the Culver City was officially incorporated. Culver City has a rich history in the film industry. The first movie studio opened shop in the city in 1918 and two years after that Metro Goldwyn Mayer built major studios. During the 1960s and 1970s the studios became less used, and in the 1990s a massive effort was undertaken to get the city to be recognized as a shopping area and business center with a revitalized downtown.

Culver City, today, maintains several residential neighborhoods of above-average income level that are popular with individuals and families who want to be near Los Angeles, but not live inside it. In other words, the city is typically suburbia. There are 16,611 households in the city and a total of 17,130 Culver City homes. Recreation in the city is available to residents through the public parks system. The city also contains a popular public theater and an art district. The Culver Ice Arena is available for skaters year-round.

Public education is served by the Culver City Unified School District. It consists of two high schools, one middle school, and five elementary schools, as well as several community outreach centers. A few private schools are also available in the city, including the popular STAR Prep Academy for children of middle and high school ages. For higher education, West Los Angeles College is just adjacent to the city and Antioch University is inside Culver City.
