Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana. With a population of 227,017, it is the second-largest city in the state. The Baton Rouge metro area has a total population of 797,208. The city is located in southeast Louisiana on the Mississippi River. The beginnings of Baton Rouge date back to 1699 when French explorers found a bloody pole decorated with animals and fish that was intended to mark the border of local tribal hunting grounds. Thus, the name of Baton Rouge (red stick) was coined. In the 1700s, the area was settled by the French but governance changed rapidly from France, to Britain, to Spain, back to France, then to the United States. A large part of the population came from the Acadians, French-speaking Canadians driven from their homes by the British in 1755. The Acadians developed into what are called the Cajun people today. In the 1950s, the city began to experiment in petrochemical industry, and since this time, it has become a major industrial center of the United States.

There are 88,973 households in Baton Rouge occupying a grand total of 91,388 housing units. This surplus of housing units makes Baton Rouge houses extremely inexpensive. Even though there is a large discrepancy in houses available and those occupied, the market bears 1,700 to 1,900 Baton Rouge houses for sale at most times. The median price of homes for sale in the city is $185,000. In addition to the houses for sale, another 600 to 700 houses are available as foreclosure listings. These homes sell for a median price of $134,000. Although housing is inexpensive in Baton Rouge, the prices are in line with the median household income, which is $30,368.

Baton Rouge is a large and extremely diverse city. Although it has been a part of the United States for over 200 years, the Acadian, French, British, and Spanish cultures are still apparent. There are over 75 distinct neighborhoods in the city offering homes of all types. The single-family Baton Rouge houses are the mainstay, but a host of high-rise condominiums, town houses, duplexes, multiplexes, and mobile homes are available throughout the city.

The economy of Baton Rouge is just as diverse and as strong as the population. The city is regularly among the top in lists of cities in the U.S. with the greatest economic strength. The proximity of the city to the Mississippi Delta makes its ports accessible by ocean-faring vessels to transport goods to and from the city. The petrochemical industry remains a huge part of the economy, with the ExxonMobile oil refinery being the second-largest in the country. Dow Chemical also has a large facility in the city. Industry aside, some of the largest employers in Baton Rouge are the State of Louisiana and Louisiana State University. A robust medical industry has also recently sprung up in the city, and movie-makers have been enticed with attractive tax incentives.

Drivers who own Baton Rouge houses are accommodated by a large and intricate system of major roadways including I-10, I-12, I-110, US-61, and US-190. Many of the main arteries have recently been upgraded due to the large growth experienced in the last two decades. Further major roadwork is being planned. The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is 10 minutes north of the city’s center and is served by four major airlines. In addition, four major railways go through the city.

Public education in Baton Rouge is served by a total of 12 school districts, many of which offer great opportunities for the best and brightest of students. Fifteen charter schools also operate in the city. Higher education is served by several universities and colleges, including Louisiana State University and Southern University and A&M College.
