San Antonio has a vast number of colleges to choose from. There are over 35 colleges in the greater San Antonio area that provide certificates and licenses, as well as, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, graduate, and doctoral degrees.

Alamo Colleges is comprised of five San Antonio colleges. These include Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Phillip’s College, and San Antonio College. This group of San Antonio colleges offer associate’s degrees, certificates and licensures. They also offer science and arts courses that can easily be transferred to four-year universities. These five colleges combined had a Spring 2010, enrollment of approximately 59,500 students. These largest of these is San Antonio College with 21,589 enrolled and is the oldest and largest single campus community college in Texas. It is also one of the largest single campus community colleges in the United States. The ethnic makeup of Alamo Colleges in Fall 2009, was predominantly Hispanic, followed by Caucasian, Black and Asian. Alamo Colleges serves all parts of San Antonio with three of the five campuses located inside Loop 410. Some high school credits are accepted and weekend classes and distance learning are available. Palo Alto offers intercollegiate men’s and women’s cross country while San Antonio College only offers intramural sports.

University of Texas – San Antonio is the largest of all the San Antonio colleges and the second largest campus in the University of Texas System. UTSA had an enrollment of 28,400 last year in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. Popular areas of study include accounting, finance, marketing, business management, biology, psychology and criminal justice among others. There are sixty-four bachelor degree programs, forty-six master degree programs and twenty-one doctoral degree programs currently being offered with seven new doctoral studies in the planning stages. Some high school credits are accepted and distance learning is available as well. UTSA has an active campus life with many of the traditional sports programs. They participate in such intercollegiate sports as football, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball.

Among the many San Antonio colleges are very industry specific colleges such as University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, The Academy of Health Care Professions, Galen College of Nursing, Mims Classic Beauty College, and San Antonio Beauty Colleges. The University of Texas Health Science Center offers programs for medicine, EMT, registered nursing, dentistry, physical therapy and other medical related fields. The Academy of Health Care Professions offers medical and dental assistant programs and medical coding. The Galen College of Nursing offers a licensed practical nursing degree. Mims Classic Beauty College and San Antonio Beauty Colleges offers cosmetology, cosmetology instructor, skin care, and manicurist programs.

Other industry specific San Antonio colleges are those offering theological and ministerial studies. Among these colleges are Baptist University of the Americas and Oblate School of Theology. Baptist University of the Americas offers certificates, associate and bachelor degrees in addition to master and doctoral degrees. Oblate School of Theology offers only master and doctoral degrees.

Other small to mid-size San Antonio Colleges that bear mentioning are Our Lady of the Lake University – San Antonio, St. Mary’s University, Trinity University, and University of the Incarnate Word. These campuses all have an enrollment between 2,000 and 6,000. Our Lady of the Lake University offers thirty-three bachelor’s degrees, fourteen master’s degrees and two doctoral degree programs. They also compete in eleven different intercollegiate sports. St. Mary’s University is the oldest Catholic University in Texas. St. Mary’s offers over forty different programs including a law degree. They compete in thirteen different sports including men’s and women’s tennis, golf, soccer and basketball. Trinity College offers studies in thirty-nine different majors as well as five graduate programs. Trinity College competes in eighteen intercollegiate sports including swimming and diving for both men and women. University of the Incarnate Word offers more than seventy undergraduate and graduate programs including more unique degrees in Fashion Design, Theater Arts, Nutrition and Broadcast Meteorology. University of Incarnate Word participates in a wide variety of sports programs including football and synchronized swimming.
