You have been working hard and have just been notified that your RN license is about to expire. Do yourself a favor, don’t waste time! When it comes to renewing your license, don’t let time pass you by, as dealing with the California Board of Nursing can be a time consuming mission.

The best thing to do is to keep track of when your license is due to expire. Make it a bill, put it on your calendar, save yourself the grief of having to rush and renew as soon as you are able. By being vigilant and renewing ahead of time, you won’t have to deal with the stress of “hoping” that your payment is recieved in time and even the possibility of missing out on working because of a lapsed license.

Renewing your license in a timely manner is easy. Three months before your renewal is due, the California Board of Nursing will send you a renewal notice. (As a side note, you need to make sure that you keep the board updated on your current address so that you get your renewal information on time. This is easily done by going to www.rn.ca.gov, click the tab at the top of the page that says “Licensees” and follow the link that says "Licensee Name/Address Changes.) You cannot renew any sooner than three months before the expiration date. If you plan on renewing by mail, there is a 6-8 week processing time. All you need to do is follow the instructions on your renewal notice and get it into the mail ASAP. The easiest and more expedient way to renew your license is to go online at www.dca.ca.gov/prolific/rns.shtml., and pay for your renewal online. Online renewals are processed within 72 hours and are perfect for those who let time get away from us.
