Early Detection of Breast Cancer

women nipple loss stages

In 2006, 191,410 women in America were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,820 women died of the disease. It is the most common form of cancer among women, and, next to lung cancer, it is the most lethal cancer among women. There are few people in America who have not been affected in one way or another by the disease; therefore, it is very important to know the symptoms of breast cancer and the best ways to ensure early detection.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

A lump on the breast or in the armpit is the most common and well-known symptom of breast cancer. Although not all lumps in the breast are malignant, many are, and anyone with evidence of a lump or irregularity should consult a doctor. Other symptoms of the early stages of breast cancer that are not difficult to recognize include both clear or bloody discharge from the nipple, persistent pain in the nipple, an inverted or retracted nipple, unusual dryness or pitted skin on the nipple, and a persistent tender breast or unexpected or unusual pains in the breast.

While not all of these symptoms are definite indications of breast cancer, if a woman has one or more of these symptoms-especially for an extended period of time-then she should consult her doctor.

In addition to the symptoms listed above, additional symptoms can only be detected through a MRI or PET scan. These include small clusters of calcifications in the breast or other dense masses in the breast.

While the conditions listed above are early symptoms of breast cancer, in the later stages of the disease, more severe symptoms often emerge. These include pain in the bones, frequent loss of breath or shortness of breath, a loss of appetite and rapid weight loss, and headaches and loss of physical strength.

The symptoms listed above are typical of most types of breast cancer. However, a more aggressive form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer has somewhat different symptoms. These include a rapid increase in breast size, extremely irritable and itchy skin that seems to have no relief, discolorations in skin color on the breast, a change in texture or temperature in the breast, and unusually intensive pain in the breast. In its latter stages, skin ulcers will develop on the breast.

Prevention and Treatment of Breast Cancer

The best way to treat breast cancer is to detect it early. In order to do so, women should conduct regular breast exams and be aware of any change in coloring, texture, or temperature in the breast. If they have any questions or concerns, it is vital to see a doctor.

When breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated with surgery and sometimes radiation. Early detection is one of the most important way to ensure breast cancer survival. More advanced stages of breast cancer are treated with chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and sometimes surgery.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer in Men

While not as common as breast cancer in women, it is possible for men to get breast cancer. The symptoms of male breast cancer are essentially the same as breast cancer in females, and early detection and treatment is just as important.
