Plan Parent Hood - Plan Parent Hood Resources - Who is Planned Parenthood?, Planned Parenthood Services, Contact Planned Parenthood

health birth control care

The first thing to understand about this important organization is that despite common misspellings such as Plan Parent Hood and Planned Parent Hood, the precise name is Planned Parenthood. Knowing the exact name and spelling can help in finding local resources online or in your city’s printed phonebook.

Planned Parenthood is one of the few organizations in the United States that deals with pregnancy, birth control, and abortion objectively, scientifically, and with the woman’s best interests at heart. They are focused on providing real-world solutions to real-world issues that can drastically affect a woman’s life and the lives of newborn babies that may come into this world in a less than ideal situation.

As a health care provider and educator that can be trusted, Planned Parenthood provides both services and information to women and teenagers across the U.S. from their global headquarters and through local chapters or action centers. For many men, women, and couples, they are the only health care providers that can be afforded.

Who is Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1916 by Margaret Sanger as the American Birth Control League. The organization was officially incorporated in 1923 and through the 1920s to the early 1940s they provided birth control while actively lobbying local, state, and federal governments for legislation concerning birth control.

In 1942, the organization officially changed their name to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and continued to focus their concerns on young, impoverished women and birth control education.

Today, Planned Parenthood includes 88 independent affiliates with over 840 locations across the country. The largest of these locations is the facility completed in 2010 in Houston, Texas. The 78,000 square foot facility serves as a regional headquarters for Texas and Louisiana.

Planned Parenthood is primarily funded through government grants, but they receive a large portion of revenue from private donors. One of the largest private donors is Microsoft founder’s Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Planned Parenthood organization is not without controversy. Although it is funded and advocated by the U.S. government, pro-life organizations often picket their locations and ask the public to boycott private and commercial contributors.

Planned Parenthood Services

Planned Parenthood of America provides quality, affordable care in cases dealing with the prevention and care of pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. The agency claims that over 90 percent of their total services are in preventative care and birth control. The main focus is in prophylactic condom use both as a means of controlling disease and preventing pregnancy. Doctors, nurses, and other staff members make it a point to talk to all patients as individuals in a manner and language they can understand and listen to. They are not in the business of placing blame, but on providing reproductive health solutions with a real and measurable effect.

Planned Parenthood does not only provide health services, but they provide reproductive and sex education to teens and adults alike. Each year, over 1.2 million people participate in their educational lectures and demonstrations.

In the midst of providing health care and education to the public, Planned Parenthood remains an active force for lobbying government agencies to expand and maintain a platform of reproductive health and rights. They not only talk to members of Congress and influential private citizens, but they argue cases in the United States Supreme Court for women’s rights and in promotion of women’s reproductive health. The Planned Parenthood Action Network is active in all 50 states and has a total membership exceeding 4 million.
