Background and Information

hosting level business company

Without a website, it will be difficult for any business or organization to get the name recognition and support that it desires. For those without knowledge of the web domain name hosting, terms like domain web host can be dizzying. However, many companies offer fairly inexpensive and user-friendly web domain hosts. With a little information and a few searches, even the most technologically unfamiliar can set up a website for their small business or any other organization.

Basic Information Domain Names and Host Names

Any web page on the internet has both a domain name and a host name. A domain name is the typical address that is associated with an internet page, such as www.google.com. A host name is actually a domain name that is assigned to a host computer. Most host computers are owned by companies that rent out their space to domain users, although large companies often have their own host computers. While these host computers can sometimes have a few host names, most only have one. Although the distinctions between host names and domain names can quickly become confusing, in general, host names can be domain names and vice versa, but in order for this to happen, they must have the characteristics of both.

Most internet users will primarily be considered with domain names and rent space from a company who will host it for them.

Major Web Host Companies

Due to its recent and sometimes controversial ad campaign, GoDaddy is probably the most well-known web hosting company. It is the largest web hosting company and so is more reliable than many of the smaller companies. However, it is more expensive than most of the other hosting companies as well. For an affordable and reliable option for web hosting, companies like InMotion or iPage make for good options. Every company has advantages and disadvantages, and you need to consider the needs for your website. For example, while some domain hosts offer free services, these companies often have inferior quality service and usually will usually require that its advertisements be on your page. Other companies offer limited storage space or require that you design the web site with their web page building software. Higher quality and more flexible service will probably require a higher monthly fee, but as the old adage goes, “You get what you pay for.”

Choosing a Domain Name

Once you’ve decided some of the basic features that you will need for your website and what hosting company you will use, you will need to decide on a domain name. Depending on the type of website you are setting up, your domain name will likely have to end in a what is known as a “top level domain.” The most common top level domain is .com, but others include .org, .edu., .net, and .gov. With most web sites, the most important part of the domain name is the second-level domain name. This is the word or words just before the top level domain. For example, in www.google.com, the second-level domain is “google.” The second level domain will typically be a word of phrase that represents your business or organization, and therefore it is important that this name be both memorable and unique. The final part of the domain name is the host server. This is typically www. (because the web site is on the world wide web), although if it is a mail server or part of a host name, it may be different.

Once you learn the basics of web hosting and domain names, you will be better suited to deal with the important business of setting up and maintaining an online presence for your business or organization.
