Rhinoplasty, commonly called a “nose job,” is a plastic surgery procedure in which the nose is reshaped or altered. Although the surgery is often done for cosmetic reasons, there are several good medical reasons for having the procedure as well, including breathing difficulties caused by a deviated septum and occasionally skin cancer on the nose. When considering to surgery for any reasons, patients often have questions about before and after rhinoplasty. It is important to get a good idea of what the surgery is and what the recovery is like before deciding whether to have it, especially if it is for a non-medical condition.

Reasons for Having Rhinoplasty Surgery and Cost of the Procedure

As noted above, there are both cosmetic and medical reasons for considering rhinoplasty. Those who are interested in cosmetic rhinoplasty are typically unhappy with the shape of their nose and want to remove a bump on the nose or make it less pointy or blunt. A most common medical condition that leads to a rhinoplasty is a deviated symptom. This condition occurs when the nasal septum, which separates the two nostrils, is pushed to one side or another, causing an obstruction in one of the nostril. While procedure to correct this is called a septoplasty, it is often accompanied by a rhinoplasty, for both cosmetic and medical reasons. Rhinoplasty is also done after the nose is damaged in an accident or to correct a congenital defect.

If the procedure is not for a legitimate medical reason, then you can expect to pay all of the costs. The average cost for a rhinoplasty is about $4500. Also, if it is determined that you need a septoplasty but not a rhinoplasty, then you will probably have to pay for part of the surgery, which could be $1500 to $2000 or more.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

Although the surgery can be done with either local or general anesthesia, most prefer general anesthesia. The procedure itself can either be open or closed. If open, the surgeon will cut the skin and tendons between the nostrils before proceeding. A closed rhinoplasty is when the doctor performs the operation without separating the skin between the nostrils from the back of the nose. The surgeon will then remove or reshape the tendons, bone, and skin as necessary. Following this, the incisions are closed with sutures of some kind, and the nose is often fitted with a metal split to hold it in place as it heals.

Recovery and Results after a Rhinoplasty

After the surgery, the patient typically returns home to recover the same day. The recovery process varies, but typically takes about a week. Sutures are removed after four to five days, and the split and dressing are typically removed after a week. During the recovery process, the patient does not have not be overly sedentary but needs to exercise caution to be sure the nose is not affected.

Rhinoplasty is generally a safe procedure, and the recovery is usually routine. Occasional bleeding can occur shortly after the surgery, but this is usually not serious. Infection or improper healing could lead to a second rhinoplasty to correct any lingering problems.
