the spa claremont dining at the claremont

Looking for a romantic hotel for your next Golden Gate getaway? Try the Claremont Hotel Club and Spa nestled at the foot of Claremont Canyon on the western slope of the Berkeley Hills, a luxurious and legendary oakland ca hotel that’s just a half an hour drive away from downtown San Francisco. Rising from 23 acres of palm trees, beautifully manicured gardens and tennis courts, the hotel with its white wooden façade, square campanile, and rows of cantilevered gables, resembles a cross between a French chateau and a Riviera resort, and has hosted such notables as Harry Truman, Bette Davis and John Wayne over its 95 year history.

The Claremont offers 279 guest rooms, no two identical, at surprisingly reasonable rates along with all the amenities you would expect from a first class luxury hotel including three outdoor pools, a full service spa and salon, a business center, multilingual staff and 24 hour concierge service. Even if you don’t end up booking an overnight stay, the Claremont’s Paragon Bar and Café is the best venue in the Bay Area for holding hands with your sweetheart and watching the sun descend into the shimmering azure waters of the San Francisco Bay.

A Brief History of the Claremont Hotel

You’d expect a hotel as spectacular as the Claremont to have a fascinating history, and indeed it does.

The land on which it sits was once a part of Rancho Antonio, the vast Peralta land grant, issued in the 19th century when the surrounding countryside was still a part of Mexican-owned Alta California.

A Kansas farmer named Bill Thornburg bought 13,000 acres of the land after striking it rich during the California Gold Rush. His wife had always dreamed of having a home that looked like an English castle, and Thornburg satisfied her whims by building an estate and stables, hiring Cockney grooms to care for their jumpers and hosting elaborate hunting parties. When Mrs. Thornburg died, Thornburg sold his estate to a family named Ballard. But on July 14, 1901 the castle caught on fire and burned to the ground. To this very day, many guests of the Claremont, an entirely smoke free facility, are “haunted” by the smell of burning.

Shortly after the fire, the property fell into the hands of Frank Havens, a San Francisco real estate developer who planned to build the ultimate railroad resort on the site with trains running into the lobby. He began construction in 1906, but the San Francisco earthquake in the April of that year slowed his efforts. Nine years later in 1915 the resort was finally complete. It was a huge, sprawling, Mediterranean-style building, the biggest on the entire Pacific coast. Throughout the 1930s, the Claremont’s Garden Room hosted musical legends like Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Tommy Dorsey

In 1998, the Claremont Hotel Club and Spa was purchased by KSL Recreation Corporation which owns many historic landmark resorts across the United States. Today the Claremont is the largest convention resort in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the most convention and exhibition space of any hotel west of Chicago. It is the premiere oakland ca hotel, recipient of the American Automobile Association’s coveted Four-Diamond Award and winner of Expedia.com Insider’s Select Award for 2010.

The Spa Claremont

The Claremont was one of the first California hotels to combine luxury accommodations with therapeutic wellness treatments, and guests have full use of the spa with its eucalyptus-filled steam rooms, whirlpool hot tubs and lounge and personal care regimens that include massages, body treatments, hydrotherapy or facials at prices that begin under $100. Guests begin their treatments by soaking in a Jacuzzi with a panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline.

Dining At the Claremont

The Claremont’s flagship restaurant Meritage specializes in the pairing of fresh, seasonally changing dishes with wines selected to enhance their flavors. While Meritage’s wine list features varietals from all over the world, the restaurant’s main focus is on Northern California’s wines – from the more celebrated names of the Napa and Sonoma valleys to the no less delicious but less well known wines made in nearby Livermore and Santa Cruz.

On your next visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, consider staying at the Claremont Hotel Club and Spa, not just the best oakland, ca hotel but one of the best hotels you’ll find anywhere.
