Health And Safety Work - Proper Health And Safety While At Work

employees guidelines sick help

Everyone benefits when employees and management work together to help maintain proper health and safety guidelines while at work. Workers will have a greatly reduced chance for injury, management will have to deal with less unexpected sick days, and overall happiness and productivity will go up.

But what are the proper guidelines? There are some general rules everyone should follow no matter what type of environment they are working in. There are other guidelines which are industry specific and usually mandated by law.

The most important rule to help maintain health is to not come in to work when you are very sick. This is important because you may make other employees sick and cause a minor epidemic. If you are sick, stay home.

Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. Use the inside of your elbow to cover your mouth and nose, not your hand. Wash your hands frequently as well, this will reduce the chance of picking up and spreading germs around the workplace.

Management should be aware of the state of their employees health as well. Be aware that they may not want to miss work for any number of reasons, but if they are displaying symptoms of flu or other illness, send them home.

Depending on the type of environment you work in, it is important to keep an eye out for problems that are affecting more than one person. Health problems can arise from problems with the ventilation systems in offices, construction nearby, or even aging carpeting and furniture.

If people are reporting skin rashes, dizziness, difficulty breathing or headaches on a daily basis, then it may be time to call in inspectors who will test the workplace for hazardous materials or contaminants that may be adversely affecting the staff.

It is important to maintain a safe workplace as well. Health and safety go hand in hand. Again, there are some basic procedures that you should follow no matter where you work, but there are also specific safety guidelines for many of the different industries.

Simple, common sense steps like ensuring that hallways and floors are clean, not slippery and are free of dangerous obstructions can make a large difference.

For offices where employees remain seated, using a computer most of the day, be certain that there is a way to address issues of discomfort. Forming an ‘ergonomics team’ can be a great help here. This team would field complaints from employees and attempt to adjust their desk or seating so that it conformed to the ergonomics standards recommended. This can prevent serious damage to the hands, wrists and back which could eventually prevent an employee from working or require expensive surgery.

For trade-specific jobs like construction, demolitions and abatement, OSHA safety guidelines must be followed by law at all times. Workers in these types of specialized industries are constantly exposed to dangerous situations and safety always comes first.

If you are working in an environment in which you feel that there are not proper health and safety procedures in place, or where you feel that there are serious issues in these areas, you should contact your local Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office. They have an extensive process to help make your workplace healthy and safe.
