Fax Toner Cartridges - Should You Buy OEM Fax Toner Cartridges Or Something Cheaper?

buying choice machine time

Although the business world has moved and is continuing to move to a largely paperless working environment, there is still a need for fax machines from time to time. Part of the move to less printing is due to speed, partly to efficiency and cost and part is due to environmental impact – it is less damaging to the environment, and less costly, to scan and email a document than to fax it to another location. The nature of each individual business will determine how many faxes they will need to send every year. And how much the fax machine is used will determine how often their fax toner cartridges will need to be replaced.

When the time comes for replacing your fax toner cartridges, whether you are an individual or a business, you have the choice of calling a service person who is either contracted to do the work for you or replacing your fax toner cartridges on your own. While some businesses may have regulations about this, for the most part every business, and individual, is interested in saving money. So most people, if they are able to replace the toner cartridge, are at least willing to entertain the possibility of performing the work themselves. If, however, an individual is unwilling or a business has compelling reasons to not have one of their employees do the work quickly and easily, then calling someone else in to do the work is the best choice.

If you have decided on replacing the fax toner cartridges in your fax machines by yourself, then there are essentially two choices you need to make. However, before you get to that point, you will need to find out which fax toner cartridge you will need to be buying. The easiest way to get this information is to open up your fax machine and see if it is visible on the toner cartridge. This way you don’t have to take it out of the fax machine. If that is not possible, you may need to remove the toner cartridge from your fax machine. If you have the manual handy, you should be able to find the model number there. Failing this, you should be able to find correct fax toner cartridges for your fax machines if you have the model number of the fax machines they are to be used in.

Once this information is safe at hand, you will need to make your first decision, which is deciding between OEM, compatible, remanufactured toner cartridges or toner refill kits. There is some debate between concerned parties about which one is the best choice based on cost, print quality, and longevity of the printed material. Of course, each side claims that theirs is the best choice, but in the end, it is really up to the individual. If cost is an issue, then refill kits are going to be the cheapest. They do require a little hands-on work and may be a little messy, although each experience will be different. The next cheapest choice will be remanufactured which are typically recycled toner cartridges that have been cleaned, refilled and then repackaged. Some companies will use recycled compatible cartridges, so if you are looking for remanufactured fax toner cartridges that use recycled OEM cartridges, make sure they state that before buying. At the next price level is where we find what are called compatible toner cartridges. These are made by companies hoping to compete with the OEM manufacturers by producing less expensive toner cartridges that they promise are just as good as the OEM cartridges yet offer a significant savings. There are a wide variety of opinions on the veracity of their claims; however no one is disputing the price. They are typically much cheaper then the OEM toner cartridges, which lie at the top of the heap as far as cost. While they are the most expensive, they are guaranteed by the manufacturer to work in your fax machine, no questions asked.

There are good reasons for both using OEM fax toner cartridges and for using an alternate path. Either way, the next step is deciding where to buy. This decision is boiled down to two basic choices: the internet or locally. Buying on the internet gives the customer the opportunity to find the absolute cheapest, rock-bottom price they can. For some, this is the most important issue. However, if searching on the internet, be sure to check out shipping prices before purchasing. The other option is buying locally. This gives you the advantage of being able to quickly and easily both ask for advice or suggestions and return something if it is defective. Sure, returns are easy to do over the internet, but they are typically far from being quick. Buying locally allows you to patronize local businesses while getting prices that are often similar to ones found on the internet. Going to bi electronics stores or office supply stores are the best bet at finding the best deal, although take into consideration the time and gas used in getting there. Paying 5 or 10 dollars more for something up the street might be cheaper in the long run than driving half an hour or more across town, and then half an hour or more back home just to save 5 bucks.

There are more options today for buying fax toner cartridges than there have every been before. Whether you decide to buy locally or online, at a big office supply store or the small one in your neighborhood, whether you decide to buy a refill kit, a remanufactured or compatible cartridge, or if you choose the OEM fax toner cartridge route, you can be assured of one thing: depending on your use, you will be needing to buy another one in the future. If you end up not being satisfied with the choice you made, you can choose a different path the next time, and the next, until you find something you are comfortable with.
