Air Filter Furnace - Cleaning or Replacing the Air Filter in your Furnace

dust home check service

If it has been more than a month since you lost saw the air filter in your furnace, there is a good possibility that it is going to need to be cleaned in order for you to avoid getting dust particles in the air that can cause your allergies to flare up. No only that, but making sure the air filter in your furnace is clean improves the efficiency of your air system, meaning that you will save yourself quite a bit of money if you make sure that it stays free of dust. Here are the instructions for making sure that your furnace has a clean air filter.

First check whether or not the carpet or floor around the area of the furnace is free of dust. If not, it is a good idea to clear this area out with a vacuum or a sweeper and dust pan before you check your furnace filter. Once you have finished doing this, find the furnace’s service panel. In most cases, it is located on the front or bottom of the furnace setup. Make sure that the furnace is turned off before you start taking anything apart. Once you are sure that the furnace will not come on, you should be able to pull or pop the service panel off of the furnace using only your hands. You may want to wear gloves because there will likely be quite a bit of dust, but other than that it usually does not require any tools to remove the service panel.

The next thing you need to do is find the air filter. The filter is a rectangular screen with mesh in the center. It can usually be found near the intake and outtake air blower. It can be inserted either in a vertical or a horizontal position. Slide this filter screen out of the furnace and check it for buildup. The buildup you are looking for will consist of a dusty, brown powder. In some cases it may not look that powdery, but you should check to see if you can see through the filter. If you can’t, there is too much buildup. Do not turn on the furnace until a new air filter has been placed in to the furnace.

If the filter is made with a plastic or metal frame that is intended for reuse, you can wash the filter out using a hose outside. Be careful to remove all of the dust before setting the filter aside to dry. Make sure that the filter is completely dry before putting it back in to the furnace.

If the air filter has a frame that is made of cardboard, that means that it is a disposable air filter. Don’t toss it right away. There are different sizes of air filters. Make sure that you write down the size before disposing of your air filter. Bring the piece of paper with the air filter size written on it to a hardware or a home supply store. You can find a replacement air filter of the right size at most of these kinds of stores. If you or somebody else in your home has allergies to dust or pollen, you may want to consider the possibility of buying an allergenic reduction filter, which reduces the presence of these particles in your home.

When you bring your new filter home, simply place it back inside the furnace where the old air filter was located, and close up the service panel.

During the coldest months of the year, you should try to clean or replace the air filter in your furnace about once every month. Throughout the rest of the year, you should still try to check up on it once every season. If you follow these steps, you will keep your home warmer in the winter without having to run the furnace as long, allowing you to save money on energy bills. You will also free your home of dust and other particles that can cause your allergies to flare up and may cause long term health issues. Keeping a clean air filter in your furnace is an easy home maintenance job that is beneficial for you and your family.
