Out of all the possible types of computer users, dedicated gamers demand the most out of their machines. Put simply, there are no software applications in existence that have the same level of system requirements as modern games. With this in mind, individuals who want to truly experience modern games on their highest settings can’t just buy a computer off the shelf. There are quite a few considerations when one wants to build a gaming computer, but the benefits far outweigh the extra effort involved.

First, consider what actually separates a gaming computer from a typical office machine. All modern computers consist of a handful of hardware components; on the most basic level, these are the processor (or CPU), RAM, hard drive, and video card. A gaming computer is no different – the components involved are merely of a higher quality. While hard drive size is mainly irrelevant, the processor speed, amount of RAM, and video/audio cards can mean the difference between a game running smoothly on its full settings and not running at all.

To build a gaming computer, one must begin with a “platform” machine, that is, a basic computer to begin upgrading. While almost all computer components are upgradeable, the single most important consideration in choosing a platform is the processor speed. The processor is the single most difficult component to upgrade due to motherboard compatibility issues, and thus the platform machine should be chosen with a powerful processor already built in.

When considering possible processors, one must take into consideration the clock speed, often called the frequency, and the amount of dedicated memory. Clock speed is expressed in GH/z, and the higher the clock speed, the more computations the machine can perform in a second. Dedicated memory, on the other hand, is usually expressed in the form of an L2 or L3 cache. With more dedicated memory available, the processor can use resources more efficiently. Combined with a high clock speed, this will lead to a more efficient machine overall, translating to better performance in games as well as in all other applications.

Once a user obtains a suitable platform machine with a powerful processor, the next step is usually upgrading the RAM, often simply called the “memory.” With more RAM, a computer can process larger volumes of data faster. Modern games are extremely demanding on a system’s RAM; many have a minimum system requirement of at least 2GB of RAM, and this is only enough to make the game run on the lowest settings. With this in mind, most gaming computers have at least 4GB of RAM – the most extreme machines are usually in the 6-8GB range.

Finally, a true gaming machine needs an upgraded video card. Most computer applications do not demand Hollywood-quality explosions and 3D special effects, and thus almost all off-the-shelf machines come with only the most basic video capabilities. Even with a fast processor and a lot of RAM, a computer will quickly reach a performance bottleneck with the high graphical demands of modern games.

Almost all aftermarket video cards offer performance superior to “on-board” cards. The most important consideration is determining the right format of card to buy. Video cards are available in PCI Express, AGP, and standard PCI format. Most newer computers have at least one PCI Express slot; this can be confirmed by looking inside the case. As a general rule of thumb, PCI Express cards offer better performance than AGP cards, and AGP cards are superior to standard PCI cards. When choosing a platform machine, avoid computers that only have standard PCI expansion slots. A video card can be seen as a very specific piece of RAM, designed exclusively for the handling of high-end graphics. With this in mind, a higher MB/GB rating on the card will lead to higher levels of performance, and therefore one should choose a card offering as much performance as possible in their given price range.

As a final consideration, aftermarket components like video cards are often very demanding on a computer’s power supply. Even if all the additional peripherals are recognized by the machine, a standard power supply is often inadequate in delivering enough power to keep everything running at full speed. After upgrading all the components mentioned above, it is highly recommended to upgrade the power supply as well. Remember: A computer is only as fast as its slowest component, and after completing all the upgrades mentioned above, a stock power supply would almost definitely create a performance bottleneck.

Building a gaming computer is no simple feat, but it is truly the only option for those who demand the best possible gaming experience.
