20 Lcd Televisions - Buying 20" LCD Televisions - Specs to Consider When Shopping for 20” LCD Televisions

ratio screen resolution tvs

Buying a new HD-capable TV is much different than buying an old-style, boxy CRT television. There are many new qualities and specifications to examine and compare to make sure that you are purchasing a quality product. To some people 20” LCD televisions appear to be smaller than 20” CRT televisions. This is because HDTVs are widescreen, having a screen ratio of 16:9 instead of the almost square 4:3 ratio. Because the screen size is measured diagonally, old, boxy 20” TVs actually stand taller than 20” LCD televisions with a wide screen.

There is one quality, however, that has not changed between styles of TV – the most popular size for a television meant for portable use is 19”. 20” TVs are a bit of a novelty and mostly exist to slightly one-up the 19” competition. While 19” TVs are easier to find, 20” TVs can still be found if you look.

Specs to Consider When Shopping for 20” LCD Televisions

If you are new to the world of HDTVs, you may not be familiar with all of the important specs that must be considered when comparing 20” LCD televisions. Here are some of the specifications that should be compared:

• Refresh Rate – This measures the number of times the screen refreshes every second. Each time it refreshes new images are displayed that provides the illusion of movement. Basic 20” LCD televisions have a refresh rate of 60 Hz (60x/sec). Higher quality models will have a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher. The higher refresh rate takes care of a problem LCD televisions can have with blurring during high action scenes.
• Resolution – Resolution is important for bigger screens. This is how many pixels are on the screen. The more pixels, the more detailed the picture will be. On big screens, a resolution of 1080p is desirable. The lesser 720p is perfect for screen sizes of 32” or less.
• Contrast Ratio – Contrast ratio measures the level of black compared to white. The higher the ratio, the more rich and vibrant the picture and colors will be.
• Viewing Angle – LCD TVs are notorious for having a diminished quality of picture when viewing from the side. This spec tells at how wide of an angle you can still adequately view the screen.
