If you have recently moved to the Portland, Oregon area and are looking for health care services, a good option to consider might be one of the 24 Kaiser Permanente facilities in the Portland area. Kaiser Permanente is one of the largest health care organizations in the United States. Established in 1945 by Henry Kaiser and Sidney Garfield, the organization now consists of three distinct groups: Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and Permanente Medical Groups. The organization is named after Henry Kaiser, and “Permanente” comes from Permanente Creek, a small creek near Kaiser’s cement plant in Cupertino, California.

Each of the independent medical groups in the organization operates regionally and has its own corporate structure, but is funded in large part by the larger organization. The organization has over 8.5 million members in its health care plans, along with 167,000 employees, including nearly 15,000 doctors. They also have 35 hospitals or medical centers and 430 individual offices.

Kaiser Permanente has had a presence in the Pacific Northwest since July 1942. In northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, most of the Kaiser Permanente facilities are associated with either the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Northwest or Northwest Permanente, P.C. Physicians and Surgeons. The Kaiser Permanente Portland area locations offer different services at different locations. In Portland itself, there are 12 Kaiser Permanente locations. These include a research clinic, the Center for Health Research, the Clackmas Eye Care Center, two dietitian and social service clinics (Division Medical Office and Rockwood Medical Office), five specialty care centers with treatments for various illnesses, physical medicine and rehab, and urgent care services at different locations (Interstate Medical Office Center, Interstate Medical Office East, Interstate Medical Office West, Interstate Medical Office South, and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center), the Interstate Radiation Oncology Center, an outpatient surgery and general treatment Center (Mother Joseph Plaza), and the Oregon Health and Science University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, which focuses on pediatric care and children with long term illnesses.

There are also twelve Kaiser Permamente locations in the Portland area suburbs. The two locations in Beaver, Oregon, the Beaver Medical Office and the Murrayhill Medical Office, offer primary care physicians and some urgent care services. The Eastman Parkway Office in Gresham, Oregon is a facility for mental health and substance abuse treatment. The Lake Road Nephrology Center in Milwaukie, Oregon specializes in treating kidney illnesses. The Tualatin Medical Office in Tualatin offers a range of services, including primary care physicians, dietitians, speech pathologists, and urgent care treatment. Of the seven locations in Clackmas, Oregon, there are two mental health and substance recovery centers (the Brookside Center and One Town Center), four medical offices with primary and specialty care physicians, along with urgent care facilities (Mt. Scott Medical Office, Mt. Talbert Medical Office, Sunnybrook Medical Offices, and Sunnyside Medical Office), and the only Kaiser Permanente hospital in the Portland area suburbs, the Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. The hospital has 233 beds and recently underwent a $150 million expansion of its cancer care facilities.
